KUCHING, Sep 12: Sarawak’s state-owned television station, TVS, is bringing its critically acclaimed documentary Guardians of the Shore to Singapore.

The documentary will be featured at the Waves of Change Festival 2024 (WOC24) at the ArtScience Museum from 22nd to 29th September.

Director Mark Nyambang expressed his excitement over the selection of Guardians of the Shore for screening at WOC24.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to have Guardians of the Shore featured as the Official Selection at the festival.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to share our work with other countries such as Singapore. I believe this documentary will create more awareness about the importance of working together in preserving and conserving the marine ecosystem for people around the world,” he told TVS in an interview.

Produced by Kayu Malam Productions, Guardians of the Shore recently won a bronze medal for the Best Factual Programme Made in Asia for A Single Asian Market category at the ContentAsia Awards in Taipei, Taiwan.

It also received a special merit award at the 15th International Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival 2023 in February.

The film premiered on TVS in February last year.

According to TVS Content Acquisition Manager Ryan Lee, the screening represents another significant achievement for TVS.

“This screening marks a milestone for TVS, as its content reaches Singaporean audiences, emphasising the growing importance of regional storytelling in addressing global environmental challenges,” he said.

Guardians of the Shore has garnered significant recognition for its exploration of marine conservation along Borneo’s coastline.

The documentary highlights the unsung heroes from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, who are dedicated to protecting the state’s marine biodiversity using artificial reef balls.

It offers an in-depth view of the challenges they faced and their tireless efforts to preserve these invaluable natural resources.

Sarawak’s reef ball project has been recognised as the longest artificial reef in the world, with a reef ball barrier stretching 746km.

WOC24 is an annual celebration aimed at inspiring love, care, and action for the ocean through curated films and captivating presentations.

“This year’s fourth edition explores the nexus of ocean conservation and technology with our Future Ocean edition.

“We hope visitors of all ages will enjoy this interactive event as we learn, reflect, and explore opportunities to protect the ocean together,” their statement said.
