Unlocking the Commercial Potential of Tuak

KUCHING, Sep 5: Sarawak’s traditional rice wine, Tuak, holds potential for international commercialization, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and broad global appeal, said Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak drew parallels between tuak and Japan’s renowned sake, suggesting that Sarawak’s iconic beverage could achieve similar international acclaim.

“Tuak is more than a drink; it’s a symbol of our cultural identity, connecting us to our ancestors and reflecting the vibrant communities of Sarawak,” Ting said in a press conference for the Borneo Tuak Festival 2024 held at the Baitulmakmur 2 building here on Thursday.

As such, Ting said Sarawak should develop policies to protect and regulate tuak production while empowering rural communities through the upcoming Borneo Tuak Festival 2024, set to be held next month.

“This festival is at the forefront for the effort, providing a platform for rural brewers to showcase their craft, create income opportunities, and strengthen the local economy.

“By supporting tuak as both a cultural and economic asset, we can ensure that this heritage not only survives but thrives in the modern world,” he added.

Furthermore, Ting said that providing a platform for tuak brewers to showcase their craft creates opportunities for entrepreneurship, income generation, and economic growth in some of the most remote part of Sarawak.

Apart from that, he said the festival plays a vital role in the tourism industry in attracting visitors to this region.

“This is more than just an event, it is an experience, a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in our culture, to taste the spirit of Sarawak, and to connect with the stories that make us who we are.

“I have no doubt that this festival will draw in not only locals but also international tourists who seek to understand the soul of Borneo,” he said.

His vision for the festival, now in its second year, was inspired by the global recognition of sake.

He shared impressive results from the previous year, noting that one vendor earned RM20,000 in just 2.5 days, with 40 percent of vendors selling out their stock.

“This success underscores the festival’s role as a critical platform for micro-to small enterprises,” he added.

Borneo Tuak Festival 2024 is scheduled to take place from September 14-16 at the Tropics City in Tabuan Dayak.

Starting from 12pm until 10pm daily, the festival will feature the largest gathering of tuak brands and a marketplace where tradition meets innovation. – TVS
