BRISBANE, Aug 14: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed and exchanged between Australia Malaysia Business Council (AMBC) and Sarawak Australia Business Chamber (SDBC) here today.

Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who witnessed the signing, said the MoU focuses on promoting bilateral trade and investment between Sarawak and Australia.

“We hope that it will pave the way for more bilateral activities in trade, investment, tourism, education, and many others,” he said in a media release today.

Tengah led a Sarawak delegation on a courtesy meeting with the Deputy Premier of Queensland cum Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment, Cameron Dick, to discuss collaboration between Sarawak, Malaysia and Australia.

During the meeting, Tengah highlighted Sarawak’s abundant natural resources including rich flora and fauna, fertile agricultural land, extensive mineral deposits, and large reserves of petroleum and natural gas

“This presents opportunities for collaborations for both Australia and Sarawak including collaboration with CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and its advanced facilities in scientific research and sustainable forest management,” he said.

This collaboration, according to Tengah is expected to significantly boost Sarawak’s efforts in sustainability and ecological conservation.

Tengah also highlighted Sarawak’s recent strides in sustainability and its emerging status as a prime investment location in Southeast Asia.

“These developments mark a significant step towards achieving long-term ecological and economic stability in the region,” the statement added.

Sarawak is increasingly being recognized as one of the most preferred investment destinations in Malaysia, particularly by Australian investors.

Hence, Tengah noted that several potential investment projects by Australian investors in the green economy, such as hydrogen production and green metals for the electric vehicle sector, are currently under serious discussion.

Also present during the courtesy meeting were Advisor to the Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak, Dato Sri Naroden Majais; State Attorney-General Datu Saferi Ali, Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR) Datu Abdullah Julaihi, and Director of Forest, Datu Hamden Mohammad. – TVS
