KUCHING, July 10: Sarawak’s renewable energy ambitions are set to receive a significant boost through a recent collaboration with Saudi Arabian company ACWA Power.

Chief Executive Officer of SEDC Energy (SEDCE) Robert Hardin said its recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ACWA Power , who developed the world’s largest clean hydrogen facility, the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company will leverage the expertise of both parties in sustainable energy solutions.

“Our recent collaboration with ACWA Power on the green hydrogen project, using captive renewable energy resources, will solidify Sarawak’s position in achieving its renewable energy ambition,” he said.

He was met after paying a courtesy call to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Wednesday.

ACWA POWER and SEDCE recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore the development of large-scale green hydrogen production utilising renewable energy sources in Sarawak.

During the courtesy call, Robert and ACWA Power Chief Investment Officer Thomas Brostrom discussed the details of the MOU with the Premier and its impact on Sarawak in its vision to become the Battery of Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile Brostrom, when met, revealed that the collaboration with SEDCE exemplifies their commitment to Sarawak’s strategic roadmap.

“We are excited to embark on the clean energy ambition in Sarawak.

“The next step is to have further collaboration on the project, as currently we have the data and what we need to prequalify in the projects as well as discussions with our stakeholders,“ he told TVS.

The planned project involves the development of renewable energy power plants with a capacity of 2GW to 4GW in Sarawak.

These facilities may incorporate various renewable energy sources, including large-scale solar farms (ground or floating), biomass plants, cascading hydro systems, wind, or wave energy systems, all equipped with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The renewable energy sources will feed as captive power into an integrated green hydrogen facility, which include ammonia synthesis plant to produce export-grade green ammonia.
