Hamid Bugo appointed as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul in Sarawak

KUCHING, July 1: The Deputy High Commissioner of the New Zealand High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Dr Sharmila Bernau today announced the appointment of Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. Hamid Bugo as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul in the Malaysian State of Sarawak.

In his speech, Hamid expressed his gratitude and honor for being appointed, highlighting the unique bond he shares with New Zealand.

“I think only in New Zealand have I experienced such privilege and hospitality.

“I am deeply honored to continue serving and fostering the relationship between Sarawak and New Zealand,” he said.

He spoke during the Matariki Festival in conjunction with the his appointment as New Zealand Honorary Consul in Sarawak held at Sheraton Hotel here on Monday.

Meanwhile, Hamid also highlighted the potential for collaborative growth and development.

“This is an opportune time for Sarawak and New Zealand to work together on various projects.

“We need collaboration and assistance, not just financially but also in terms of technical skills.

“I am committed to bringing both regions together to exploit these opportunities,” he added.

Hamid Bugo graduated from Canterbury University, New Zealand with a Bachelor and a Master of Arts in Economics.

He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Studies from Harvard Institute of Development Studies, U.S.A.

He was honoured with a Ph.D. (in Commerce) by Lincoln University, New Zealand.

For the record, Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades.

For New Zealand, the appearance of Matariki marks the Māori New Year, a time for families to come together to celebrate, reflect and commemorate.

It also celebrates the unique cultural heritage of the Māori people, fostering a sense of community and continuity.

In 2022, Matariki was gazetted as New Zealand’s first indigenous public holiday. – TVS
