KUCHING, June 21: Petroleum Sarawak (PETROS) is gearing up to initiate an extensive study aimed at creating a Sarawak Storage Atlas to pinpoint potential Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) sites across the state.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan highlighted that PETROS will concurrently conduct seismic acquisitions and actively promote these identified sites through a Sarawak Bid Round to attract CCUS developers and investors.
“The progress of the CCUS projects being developed through partnerships with PETRONAS, PTTEP of Thailand and Japanese Consortiums,” he said in a statement after chairing the 3rd meeting of Sarawak’s Petroleum Advisory and Coordination Committee (PACC).
The meeting also provided an update on the transition of PETROS as the sole Gas Aggregator, after Petronas has given assurance that it would comply with relevant State Laws particularly the Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016 (Amendment 2023).
“Petronas, through engagement session with the Sarawak Government, has assured that they will work collaboratively to ensure a seamless transition.
“Discussions between PETROS and Petronas are currently advancing well, and it will be concluded by July 1, 2024,” he added.
During the meeting, Awang Tengah said he was pleased with the progress made by PETROS in advancing Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) projects, which include the Miri 500 megawatt Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant, Samalaju gas pipeline as well as the Kuching Hub and its planned infrastructure.
He reminded the members of the committee on the objective of the Committee; to increase Sarawak’s participation in the Oil and Gas industry in both upstream and downstream activities to stimulate the domestic economy.
“The high-technology investment potentials in Sarawak can only be realised with proper energy planning and ability to secure reasonably priced natural gas.
“This will create local jobs for Sarawakians and Sarawakian Contractors, by working together with Ministries, Agencies as well as PETROS,” he said.-TVS
