8th Mile Flyover, Kuching among priority areas to be upgraded over ‘redline’ alignment

KUCHING, June 11: Several areas affected by the ‘redline’ alignment along the Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway (LPB) have been identified in the state.

The redline refers to the existing original routes built before the construction of the LPB, and need to be upgraded to meet the standards of the mega project.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi revealed that discussions have been made with the Sarawak Government and the Public Works Department (JKR) for the financing of the infrastructure upgrades for the affected areas, setting the priotity areas on their list.

“Discussions have been made with our Sarawak Premier, as well as Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, on the priority areas involved in the ‘redline’ alignment.

“Initially, these areas were not included in the LPB and need enhancement, hence the Sarawak government included the proposed flyover along 8th Mile road in Kuching which undergoes heavy traffic congestion daily, as well as Saratok,” he said.

Nanta spoke to reporters after paying a courtesy call to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Tuesday.

In a statement on April, Nanta said that the redline alignment involving federal and state roads in Sarawak will be redesigned and upgraded to meet the standards of the LPB Project, with the Works Ministry requesting an allocation of around RM1 billion.

Other affected areas include Serian, Sibu, Bintulu, Julau, and Miri. – TVS
