CANADA, June 7: A Sarawak delegation, led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, visited the Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM), British Columbia University in Vancouver on Thursday.
The visit aims to underscore Sarawak’s commitment to develop the mining sector in a sustainable and responsible manner.
“The state government is looking forward for collaboration with British Columbia University with our local higher learning institutions.
“The collaboration aims to provide mining related certified courses and training programme to Sarawakians,” said Awang Tengah in a statement.
He also pointed out the importance of learning from Vancouver’s leading mining industry, citing the success as a benchmark to empower the mining sector.
“The mining sector which we can emulate from Vancouver, is one of the six key economic sector under our Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) which makes this visit crucial for our development,” he added.
During the visit, the delegation were briefed on matters related to mining industry in Canada.
The discussion with BRIMM representatives touched on key development aspects of a responsible mining industry including training, talent development, and institutional framework.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh, and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali.- TVS
