KUCHING, May 29: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) has announced that it is exploring renewable energy investment opportunities in Sarawak.
Its CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said the company wants to invest in development of floating solar farms.
His intention was expressed during a courtesy call with the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.
“This visit follows the very important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that we signed and witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak during his visit to Dubai last December at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28).
Mohamed Jameel said that as one of the largest renewable energy companies globally, they possess the capability to invest in high-impact green economy projects.
“We want to invest and evaluate opportunities in renewable energy projects, particularly floating solar, up to a capacity of one gigawatt,” he added.
Meanwhile, he said Masdar hopes to work closely with Sarawak Energy under the guidance and support of the Sarawak Government.
“This is because we are not only looking forward to developing gigawatt capacity in Malaysia as a whole but also in other Asian countries.
“(Previously) the company has invested in Indonesia and now with Sarawak, we hope to work closely with the government and local partners to develop large-scale renewable energy capacity,” he said.
In December 2023, Abang Johari visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to attend COP28, where he also witnessed the signing of an MoU between Masdar and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), demonstrating a joint commitment to sustainable energy practices and potential strategic partnerships.-TVS
