PETALING JAYA, May 10: Senate president Datuk Mutang Tagal, 69, has passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Friday, May 10.
According to a statement from the Senate President’s Office, he had been undergoing treatment at IJN since returning from an official working visit to Azerbaijan on Monday, May 6.
“With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Senator Datuk Mutang Tagal, the President of the Senate, at 11:46 am today at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur.
“Further details about his funeral arrangements and tribute ceremonies will be provided later,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Tagal expressed heartfelt gratitude for the condolences and prayers they have received, acknowledging the support during this challenging time.
Datuk Mutang Tagal, who was elected as the 20th Dewan Negara president at the age of 69, took his oath in the Senate on February 19, 2024.
He was the first Orang Ulu to hold the position and had previously served as the Member of Parliament for Bukit Mas, Sarawak, from 1982 to 1990.
With a background in law, he is survived by his wife and three children.-TVS
