Government urged to address rising human-crocodile conflict

LUNDU, April 19: The Sarawak government has been urged to address the growing numbers of crocodile attacks in the state.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri stressed on the urgency to tackle the issue, noting that crocodiles are becoming an increasingly common sight in urban areas and residential drainage systems.

“I trust that the Sarawak government has been actively addressing this issue, even during the time of the late Chief Minister Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“However, these crocodiles are now invading urban areas, possibly due to population growth and other factors,” Nancy said.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation for the crocodile victim at Kampung Sungai Rayu, she assured that welfare aid would be extended to the victim’s family once the victim is found.

Nancy, who is also Santubong MP, highlighted that the Welfare Department’s policy includes provisions for victims of wildlife incidents and comprehensive assistance during such crises.

She also advised caution to those residing near rivers or areas prone to the reptiles presence.

“I defer to the expertise of local residents who are more acquainted with their surroundings. They possess an innate understanding of potential risks, especially regarding crocodile presence,” she added. – TVS
