KUCHING, Mar 13: Local shipbuilders are urged to participate more and explore new markets and opportunities in the industry, capitalising on Sarawak’s reputation as the heartland of shipbuilding and ship repair industry in Malaysia.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the shipbuilding industry is a niche and strategic industry in Sarawak, contributing to economic growth and employment opportunities.
“There are untapped opportunities in new sectors such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), green transportation and new areas of sustainable oil and gas sector for the state’s shipbuilding industry to explore,”
“With the increasing demand for oil and gas, along with growing logistic demand, the maritime industry is expected to continue to remain strong, driving future growth and competitiveness,” he said in a statement.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, noted that they would need to upgrade their current capability by adopting new digital technologies.
He said this following his visit to Asia Pacific Maritime Expo 2024 in Singapore, which also saw the participation of 12 Sarawakian shipbuilding companies.
He said many vessels made in Sarawak are exported to countries such as Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Australia as well as Europe, showcasing the expertise and craftsmanship of Sarawakian shipbuilders globally. – TVS
