AZAM navigates challenges of new media landscape

KUCHING, Mar 4: The rise of citizen journalism in the information landscape could potentially challenge the ethical standards of journalism practiced by media professionals.

In this regard, Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) reaffirms its dedication to navigating netizen journalism through a media coffee chat held here, today.

Its deputy chairman, Dato Hajah Norhyati Mohd Ismail, said the increasing presence of citizen journalists on social media platforms have made it the primary channels for establishing the new narrative.

“Despite its popularity, social media remains a reliable source of information, although it faces challenges such as the spread of fake news.

“According to statistics from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), there were over 3,111 complaints of fake news in 2020, highlighting the importance of ethical journalism in combating misinformation.

“The competitive landscape and digital disruption have compelled media organisations to adapt, with online and social media platforms becoming vital for reaching to audiences, particularly millennials.

“We have observed that nearly all established media outlets are aggressively utilising these platforms. Those who fail to do so risk being left behind,” said Norhyati whose text speech was read by moderator Ali Suhaili during AZAM Sarawak Media Coffee Chat 2024: Spicing Up Sarawak Journalism: Bridging Perspectives, Strengthening Communities event held this morning.

The panelists included Rudi Affendi Khalik, Nancy Nais Hsiao Phing, Firdaus Arasy Idris, Noratikah Mohamad Ashari, and Sarah Hafizah, moderated by Alice Wee alongside Ali Suhaili.

Throughout the event, they deliberated on various key points, such as the evolution of journalism, their experiences, and the impact of social media and artificial intelligence (AI).

Norhyati expressed hope that the coffee chat could foster collaboration and facilitate the sharing of experiences among journalists, particularly regarding the evolving news practices.

“We are confident that through open communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment, we can amplify the government agenda and the voices of diverse communities.

“I believe that with the media, especially journalists, diligently delivering accurate news professionally and responsibly, while maintaining quality and adhering to ethics.

“It can serve as a great force in nation-building,” she added. – TVS
