Six TVS programmes clinch Silver Award for Spotlight Documentary Film Awards

KUCHING, Feb 24: Six TVS programmes won the Silver Award at the prestigious Spotlight Documentary Film Awards recently.

The international award recognises exceptional storytelling and excellence in creativity showcased in its compelling documentaries.

The winning documentaries include Above and Beyond Season 2, Headgear Hunting, Homegrown, In Search of the Food Preservers, Journey of The Bidayuh, and Ride Your Story.

Above and Beyond Season 2: Unveiling the Unsung Heroes Behind NGOs
The second season of the documentary series Above & Beyond showcased stories of extraordinary individuals going above and beyond in their commitment to social causes.

From the transformation of a cameraman into a magician to the inspiring journey of a fighter who overcame multiple diseases with unwavering positivity, the six-episode series shed light on the often-overlooked individuals who dedicate their lives to making a difference in their communities.

Headgear Hunting: Exploring Cultural Treasures 

The documentary follows Dr. Welyne Jehom, an anthropologist from Universiti Malaya, as she embarks on a quest to discover iconic female headgears across various locations in Sarawak.

From remote villages to bustling markets, Dr. Jehom’s journey offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse traditions and heritage of women’s crowning glory in the region.

Director Yusmal Ghazali said Headgear Hunting is a celebration for all those mystical and mesmerising headgears that majestically represents the various ethnic communities all over the world.

“On behalf of the team, I feel very honoured on being awarded the Silver Award. This is a recognition for the unsung stories out there,” he told TVS.

Homegrown: A Culinary Exploration from Farm to Table
Achang, a locally renowned chef, leads viewers on a captivating journey through the heart of traditional cuisine in the documentary series Homegrown.

This immersive experience delves into the intricacies of home-grown ingredients – from their cultivation in local farms to their transformation into delectable dishes in Achang’s mobile kitchen.

Each episode culminates in a reconstructed dish crafted by Achang, offering a tantalising blend of tradition and innovation such as midin tempura and kepayang pudding, made of poisonous kepayang fruit that contains cyanide if not processed correctly.

Local chef reinvents Sarawak dishes in TVS food and travel show, Homegrown

Director Nicole Goh said the production team was inspired by Sarawak’s rich variety of local produce, and creating Homegrown allowed them to showcase Sarawak’s regional bounty, expressing local cultural identity through food and reconnecting with their roots.

“We are humbled and grateful (for the award). Such recognition pushes us to do more and be more involved in creating space for conversations and stories of our local society,” she said.

In Search of the Food Preservers: A Culinary Journey Through Sarawak’s Indigenous Heritage

This series chronicles Jia Yi’s escape from the confines of the courtroom during the lockdown as she discovers a newfound passion for big biking.

Determined to explore life beyond her professional realm, Jia Yi embarks on her first road trip, accompanied by seasoned rider, Tiny Jen.

Tiny Jen – known for her impressive riding feats despite her diminutive stature – serves as a beacon of empowerment in pursuing dreams. Her journey, which includes conquering the challenging Khardung La pass at 18,380 feet above sea level, inspires viewers to embrace their aspirations fearlessly.

Together, Jia Yi and Tiny Jen embark on an epic adventure from the northernmost tip of Borneo in Sabah to Kilometre 0 of the Pan Borneo Highway at Sarawak’s Telok Melano.
