KUCHING, Feb 21: A profound loss has befallen Sarawak as we mourn the passing of the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who peacefully left us at the age of 87.
According to his daughter, Datuk Hanifah Hajjar Taib, it was revealed that Tun Taib took his final breath at 4:40 AM at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, leaving a void that cannot be filled.
His remains will be at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur before being brought back to Kuching in the afternoon.
Tun Taib, a true symbol of wisdom and compassion, has left an indelible mark on countless lives during his exceptional years of leadership.
His enduring legacy is unparalleled in Malaysia’s history, as he held the prestigious position of Chief Minister of Sarawak for an incredible 33 years, from March 1981 to February 2014.

Following this remarkable tenure, he graciously took on the role of Governor of Sarawak, serving since March 2014 until 26 January 2024.
A state funeral will be held at the new Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex tomorrow. -TVS
