INSTEP’s Green Commitment: Nurturing Sustainability from Within

ByCheryl Syahmina Toh

Kuala Terengganu, Sept 21: Navigating the complexities of diverse environments and regulations in the energy industry can be challenging, but this challenge can be effectively addressed through professional education.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Insitut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP), Idris Ibrahim highlights the institution’s commitment to overcoming these challenges through a sustainable approach, as demonstrated by their green agenda on campus.

“PETRONAS views the sustainability development such as Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) as a new source of growth although it requires a huge investment, we must also safeguard the environment as this affects our license to operate.

“Hence, we incorporate this in our Technical Enrichment Programme (TEP), executed deliberately in a specific curriculum embedded into our Production, Operation and Maintenance modules. For example, in Electrical, students are taught to operate and maintain solar energy equipment,” he said this in an exclusive interview with TVS at INSTEP Institute located at Bukit Rakit, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

He noted that in pursuit of creating a top-notch human capital development programme, it is essential to instill awareness of sustainability elements, particularly concerning the Net Zero Carbon Emissions 2050 illustrative pathways, starting from the grassroots level.

In addition to implementing sustainable training modules, the institute promotes sustainable lifestyle choices among students.

“As they walk back from their classrooms, they can observe actual plants thriving, thanks to our Rainwater Harvesting system, which collects rainwater through an integrated drainage system and their classroom lights are powered by solar energy.

“It’s best to nurture young minds, in creating this ecosystem,” added Idris.

INSTEP’s 200-acre campus located at Bukit Rakit, Kuala Terengganu is powered by Solar Photovoltaic (PV), a project in collaboration with GENTARI, generating 1,826 MW-hours of clean energy per annum, which supplies 30 percent of INSTEP overall requirement.

Furthermore, INSTEP has previously initiated food composting as part of its commitment to the “from food waste to resources” concept. This initiative is estimated to compost approximately 15,000 kg of food waste annually.

TEP is a 10-month pre-employment sponsorship programme, sponsored by PETRONAS Carigali Sarawak Asset and Sabah Asset.

Recently, a total of 167 TEP Core Upstream students of batch 2022 from Sabah and Sarawak graduated, receiving certificates in Production, Instrument, Mechanical, and Electrical.
