Malaysia grapples with worsening childhood obesity crisis

KUCHING, AUG 29: Malaysia is facing a growing and alarming challenge in the form of childhood obesity, as revealed by a recent study conducted by the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS).

Deputy Minister of Health of Malaysia, Lukanisman Awang Sauni stressed that the battle against childhood obesity in Malaysia has reached a critical juncture.

Expressing his deep apprehension over this surge in childhood obesity, as the study unveiled a concerning trend, with a significant number of Malaysian children grappling with excess weight.

“NHMS indicatesd the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children aged 13 – 17 years has increased from 24.6% in 2012 to 30.5% in 2022.

“Such situation requires serious attention and a more sustainable approach to obtain optimal impact,” he said when officiating the launch of ‘Cara Hidup Anda Terbaik” (C-HAT) Intervention Programme here today.

Lukanisman further stressed that these findings have raised long-term health concerns for affected children, as well as the burden placed on the healthcare system. Unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, and limited access to nutritious food have been identified as contributing factors.

In response to this pressing crisis, C-HAT programme that is comprehensive, encompassing nutrition, physical activity, exercise, mental health, and psychology., specifically designed to address the issue of obesity among school children.

He also called upon the nation to unite and prioritise the health and well-being of its younger citizens, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for all- TVS
