Sarawak’s rights in sight

KUCHING, Aug 2: Sarawak Government is currently engaged in negotiations with the aim of reclaiming more of its rights as enshrined under the Malaysian Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, expressed hope that these negotiations would be successfully resolved within the year.

This development comes after the Federal Government gave the green light to Sarawak’s desire to regain control over the administration of Bintulu Port and the takeover of MASwings.

Abang Johari further hinted at the retrieval of a third set of rights, keeping it a surprise for now, but reiterating their intention to reclaim it within this year.

“As for the third, it will be a surprise, however we wish to claim it back by this year,” he told this to reporters after attending the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) Fifth Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday.

On another development, in regards to the formation of the Board of Directors for the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Fund, the Premier stated that the process involves strategic planning and the appointment of its directors, necessitates a press conference to disclose the details.

“A press conference would be held for this as it involves strategic plannings and appointments of its directors,” he added.

Meanwhile, at the celebration, Abang Johari honoured 27 media organisations in the state with appreciation awards, including the Sarawak Media Group (SMG).

Also present were, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communications Unit), and UKAS Director, Samuel Simon. – TVS
