Exhibiting Sarawak’s history in the UK

ByDouglas Elliot

KUCHING, June 10: Sarawak will soon have a permanent exhibition to showcase its rich history and heritage in the United Kingdom.

The Brooke Trust director, Jason Brooke, disclosed that the museum will be at the Rajah’s old retirement home, Burrator House, in Devon.

According to Jason, the trust was able to acquire Rajah Sir James Brooke’s Burrator House with private and public funding.

“With Sarawak museums which particularly have a strong connection with the UK and also where all the Rajahs were buried at the tombs in Devon, the charity has acquired the Burrator House, and we are hoping to install a museum there,” he said to reporters when met recently.

He added that the Burrator House will be an educational place showcasing Sarawak’s rich history and heritage to the community there.

“If we could do that, we could have a natural bridge between the UK and Sarawak, promoting this element of the state through history and heritage and hopefully to promote the state over there in the UK,” Jason said.

Slated to be opened in 2023, the Burrator House will complement the Trust’s existing Brooke Gallery and the Rajah Brooke Cottage in Kuching.- TVS
